The Copa del Rey MAPFRE is one of Europe’s premier sailing regattas, held each summer off the coast of Palma de Mallorca. While the race itself is a spectacle of precision and speed, the best way to experience it is from the water. A Marbella charter boat lets you anchor within sight of the action, with drinks, snacks, and a skipper handling everything. Depart from Puerto Banús, cruise across the Alborán Sea, and watch world-class sailors compete in the Bay of Palma. This guide explains how to plan your day, which boats work best, and what you can expect from the experience.

Why watch the Copa del Rey from a charter boat?

From the shore, you see only a fraction of the race. From a boat, you’re part of the scene. You can follow the fleet as they round buoys, tack upwind, and sprint downwind. The Bay of Palma offers steady breezes in July and August, with average wind speeds of 10–15 knots and water temperatures around 25°C. A charter boat gives you shade, a bathroom, and a place to sit while you watch. Plus, you can swim between races.

Which boats are available for the regatta?

Our fleet includes motor yachts from 8m to 29m, all departing from Puerto Banús. For a day trip to Palma, we recommend boats with a flybridge for elevated views. The Mangusta 80 (24m, 12 pax) is a popular choice, with a spacious deck and free jet ski included on Tier B charters starting at €4,719 for 4 hours. The Azimut 58 Flybridge (17.6m, 12 pax) offers a comfortable saloon and sun pads. For smaller groups, the Astondoa 40 (12.5m, 9 pax) or Azimut 39 (12.5m, 11 pax) are excellent value, priced from €749 for 2 hours up to €2,299 for 8 hours. All prices include skipper, fuel, drinks, snacks, and VAT.

How to plan your day: Marbella to Palma

The crossing from Puerto Banús to the Bay of Palma is about 60 nautical miles. At cruising speed (20–25 knots), it takes roughly 3 hours. We recommend departing at 08:00 to arrive by 11:00, in time for the first race starts. The regatta typically runs from 12:00 to 17:00, with multiple races per day. Your skipper will anchor in a permitted spectator zone. Bring sunscreen and a light jacket – the sea breeze can be brisk even in summer. After the races, you can cruise back to Marbella or extend your day with a stop at Cala del Faro or Cala Cortés for a swim.

What to expect on board

Every charter includes a licensed skipper who knows the local waters and regatta protocols. Fuel is covered, so no surprises. Drinks include water, soft drinks, beer, white wine, and cava, plus light snacks like olives, crisps, and nuts. If you want a full meal, you can bring your own or arrange catering (contact us for options). Safety equipment and insurance are included. The boat has a shaded saloon, a bathroom, and a deck for sunbathing. On Tier B boats, a jet ski is included free – great for exploring between races.
