When the sunset cruise actually leaves

Departure is 60–75 minutes before official sunset, so you're at anchor with a drink in hand when the colour starts. Local sunset times by month:

March19:3018:15

Plan to arrive at the marina 15 minutes before departure — there's no "please wait for us" on a sunset booking when the actual sun is on a fixed schedule.

The standard route

From Puerto Banús, the classic 2-hour route is:

  1. Slip out of the marina mouth heading south-east, displacement speed.
  2. Cruise west along the Golden Mile — the stretch from Banús to Marbella town centre — passing Marbella Club, Nikki Beach and Ocean Club from offshore.
  3. Continue past Marbella Marina to anchor briefly off Río Real with the La Concha mountain backlit behind you.
  4. Slow turn back as the sun drops, drinks served, photos taken.
  5. Return to Puerto Banús just after twilight, marina lights coming on.

From Marbella Marina the route inverts: head east to Cabopino first, anchor and return. From Cabopino, you stay east of Marbella town, with the same anchor-and-watch pattern. All three routes deliver the same sunset and very similar prices — pick by the closest marina to your hotel.

Which boat fits a sunset cruise best?

For comparison with full-day options, the boat rental Marbella hub lays out every boat type side-by-side.

What's included

Not included: alcohol (BYO — cava and prosecco are the local picks), prepared dinner (add a catered platter for €25–€60 per head), and the skipper tip (€20–€40 cash is normal for a great sunset).

Photography tips from local skippers

Shoot the half hour BEFORE the sun drops, not after — that's when the light is on the boat and on the coast simultaneously. Stand on the bow facing land for the Golden Mile shot, or face west for the silhouette-against-sun shot. iPhones in HDR mode handle the contrast better than many people expect; bring a microfibre cloth for sea spray on the lens.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the sunset cruise leave?

60–75 minutes before sunset. December around 17:15, March 18:15, June 20:40, September 19:30. We confirm the exact time the day before.

How long is a typical sunset cruise?

Two hours is the default. Three-hour cruises (€350) are available for groups who want a longer dinner on board.

Which boat is best for sunset?

10–12 m motor yacht for couples; sail or power catamaran for 8+ guests. Avoid sportfishers and licence-free boats — they're working boats, not romantic ones.

Can we have champagne and food on board?

Yes, BYO welcomed on most boats (cava is the local choice). Catered platters €25–€60 per head, 24 hours notice.

What if it's cloudy?

Cloudy Marbella sunsets are often more dramatic than clear ones. Trip runs unless wind exceeds Force 4–5. Full refund or rebook for weather cancellations.
