Gibraltar by boat from Marbella is one of the great long-range day trips on the Costa del Sol. Round trip is 95-100 nautical miles, 8-10 hours total, and on a flat-sea day in September it's spectacular — the Rock looms an hour out, you cruise into Marina Bay, eat fish and chips in the marina, possibly run up the cable car, and motor home with the sun behind you. This page covers the realistic version (and when not to attempt it).

The route
From Puerto Banús or Sotogrande (better starting point — saves 20 NM), head west-south-west passing Estepona, Sotogrande, Punta Carnero. The Strait opens up after Punta Carnero and Gibraltar comes into view about 30 minutes later. Marina Bay (the main charter visitor marina on Gibraltar's western side) is the standard arrival. Total one-way from Puerto Banús: ~50 NM, 3.5 hours at 14 knots.
Realistic timetable
| Time | Activity |
|---|---|
| 07:30 | Boarding at Puerto Banús, fuel check, briefing |
| 08:00 | Depart Puerto Banús, heading west-south-west |
| 11:15-11:30 | Arrive Marina Bay Gibraltar, customs declaration, berth |
| 11:45 | Walk into town — Casemates Square, Main Street |
| 12:30 | Cable car up the Rock (45 min including queue summer) |
| 14:00 | Lunch at Marina Bay — pub style, fish and chips, real ales |
| 15:30 | Back to the yacht, departure paperwork |
| 16:00 | Depart Gibraltar, head east |
| 19:30 | Return to Puerto Banús |
This assumes a yacht doing 13-14 knots consistently. Slower sailing yachts add 1.5-2 hours each way, making it tight before dark in autumn.
Cost breakdown
- Yacht charter day rate: €1,500-€3,500 depending on size and speed.
- Fuel surcharge: typical Costa del Sol day charters include fuel for 12-15 NM cruising. Gibraltar adds 80+ NM beyond that — expect a €200-€500 fuel surcharge agreed before departure.
- Gibraltar marina berth (3-4 hours): €30-€80 depending on yacht size.
- Cable car: £37.50 / €44 adult, £30 / €35 child.
- Lunch: €20-€40 per head at marina pubs.
- Skipper tip: €50-€100 for a long day, €100-€200 on luxury yachts.
Weather window
The Strait of Gibraltar is the only stretch on the Marbella-Cádiz coast that becomes genuinely unfriendly above 20-knot wind. Easterly levante and westerly poniente both funnel through the Strait and build a steep, short sea that's miserable in any boat under 18 metres. Realistic charter weather constraints:
- Wind under 15 knots all day — go.
- Wind 15-20 knots forecast — go on yachts 16 m+, captain's call.
- Wind 20+ knots — cancelled, no exception.
September has the best statistical weather window. June and July also work most days. April-May and October are 50/50 — book a flexible date.
Paperwork
Gibraltar is outside the EU. From the boat side, the captain radios Gibraltar Port Control on VHF Channel 12 about 30 minutes out, declares vessel registry and persons aboard. On arrival at Marina Bay, you walk to the harbour office, present passports, pay the berth fee, and you're in the territory. Total formality time: 10-15 minutes. Departing is even simpler.
Smarter alternatives
If the goal is just "see Gibraltar", driving the coast (90 minutes by car) and crossing the land border into Gibraltar costs €0 and takes 3 hours each way. The boat trip is for the experience of crossing by sea — Africa visible to the south, dolphins en route, the Rock approaching by water. For a more practical wildlife day, see dolphin watching Marbella. For a full-day yacht charter without the offshore commitment, see yacht charter Marbella.

Frequently asked questions
Can I do Gibraltar and back in one day from Marbella?
Yes on a fast motor yacht starting at 08:00, returning by 18:00-19:30. Slower sailing yachts and catamarans struggle to return before dark.
Do we need passports?
Yes. Gibraltar is outside Schengen and outside the EU. Bring your passport. Captain handles arrival declaration on VHF; border checks at the marina are quick.
How much does it cost?
€1,500 for a small motor yacht, €2,200-€2,800 for a 14-16 m yacht with proper cruising fuel, €3,500+ for 18 m+ at planing speed. Plus berth fees, fuel surcharge and tip.
Can I see Africa from the boat?
Yes, on a clear day from anywhere between Marbella and Gibraltar. The Moroccan Rif mountains are visible 30-50 km across the Strait, especially after a fresh poniente (westerly) wind clears the haze. The view is sharpest in the morning before the afternoon thermals build.
What's the fuel surcharge typically?
€200-€500 depending on yacht size and intended cruising speed. The standard day-charter price covers 12-15 NM of cruising; Gibraltar adds 80-100 NM round trip. Captains itemise this on the quote — you'll see the surcharge before you commit, not as a surprise at the end.
