Estepona’s coastline offers some of the best inshore and offshore fishing on the Costa del Sol. Whether you’re after sea bass in the rocky shallows or bluefin tuna in the deep blue, an Estepona boat charter fishing trip puts you on the water with a licensed skipper and a fully equipped vessel. This guide covers target species by season, the licence you need, and which of our boats suit a serious fishing day.
Why Choose an Estepona Boat Charter for Fishing
Estepona sits between Marbella and Gibraltar, with quick access to the Alboran Sea. The seabed drops quickly to 50–100 m just a few nautical miles offshore, creating ideal conditions for pelagic species. The coastline also has rocky reefs, sandy bottoms, and seagrass meadows that hold bream, dentex, and sea bass. A dedicated fishing charter from Puerto Banús means you can be on productive grounds within 20–30 minutes of leaving the marina.
Target Species by Season
The fishing calendar in Estepona is varied. Here’s what you can expect month by month:
- Spring (March–May): Sea bass (lubina) and dentex close to shore. Water temperatures rise from 15°C to 18°C. Good for jigging and live bait.
- Summer (June–September): Bluefin tuna (atún rojo) from 10–20 NM out. Amberjack (medregal) around underwater structures. Sea surface temps hit 24–26°C.
- Autumn (October–November): Bonito, mackerel, and horse mackerel. Also good for common two-banded seabream. Water cools to 20°C.
- Winter (December–February): Bottom fishing for red mullet, grouper, and pouting. Slower but peaceful. Water drops to 14–16°C.
Check with your skipper a few days before departure for the latest reports on where the fish are feeding.
Fishing Licences and Regulations
Every angler aged 14 or older must hold a valid licencia de pesca recreativa issued by the Junta de Andalucía. The licence costs roughly €7–€15 and is valid for one calendar year. You can apply online in 10 minutes. The skipper will verify licences before leaving the dock. Minimum sizes and bag limits apply – for example, sea bass must be at least 36 cm, and you may keep a maximum of 5 per person per day. Bluefin tuna has strict quotas; your skipper will handle the paperwork if targeting tuna.

Every charter includes a licensed skipper, fuel, insurance, safety equipment, Spanish IVA (21%), and a drinks package (water, soft drinks, beer, white wine, cava) plus light snacks. Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a fishing license for an Estepona boat charter fishing trip?
Yes. Any angler aged 14 or older must hold a valid Spanish recreational fishing licence (licencia de pesca recreativa). You can apply online via the Junta de Andalucía website. The licence is cheap (around €7–€15) and valid for one year. The skipper will check it before departure.
What fish can I catch on an Estepona boat charter?
Common catches include sea bass (lubina), dentex, common two-banded seabream, bonito, and amberjack. From June to September, bluefin tuna is the trophy target. Mackerel and horse mackerel are present year-round. The exact species depends on depth, season, and time of day.
Which boat from your fleet is best for fishing?
Our Mangusta 80 (24m, 12 pax) and K80 (24m, 12 pax) offer large aft cockpits, plenty of deck space for rod holders, and a fighting chair. The Azimut 58 Flybridge (17.6m) also has good access to the water. For smaller groups, the Pershing 46 (14m, 10 pax) works well.
Do you provide fishing rods and tackle?
No. Fishing gear is not included on any of our charters. You need to bring your own rods, reels, lures, bait, and landing nets. If you don’t have equipment, several tackle shops in Marbella and Estepona offer daily rentals. Let us know in advance if you need porters to help load gear.
What is the best season for a fishing trip from Estepona?
Spring (March–May) is excellent for sea bass and dentex near the shore. Summer (June–September) offers the best chance for bluefin tuna and amberjack, especially around the 10–20 NM marks. Autumn (October–November) sees bonito and mackerel. Winter (December–February) is quieter but still productive for bottom species.
Can I keep the fish I catch?
Yes, within legal limits. Spanish regulations set minimum sizes and daily bag limits per species. For example, sea bass must be at least 36 cm, and you can keep a maximum of 5 per person per day. The skipper will advise on the rules. We strongly recommend catch-and-release for larger specimens.
How long does a typical fishing charter last?
Most fishing trips are full-day charters (8 hours) to reach productive grounds 10–20 NM offshore. Half-day (4–5 hour) trips are possible but limit your range. Our Tier A boats (Astondoa 40, Azimut 39) are available from €2,299 for 8 hours, all-inclusive. Larger boats like the Mangusta 80 start at €4,719 for 4 hours.
Where does the charter depart from?
All our boats depart from Puerto Banús, about 20 minutes by car from Estepona. We can arrange a complimentary taxi or minibus transfer from your Estepona hotel or apartment. The marina has ample parking if you drive. Departure time is flexible – early morning starts (7:00–8:00) are common for fishing.
