Cala de Mijas Music Festival turns a quiet stretch of Costa del Sol beach into one of the busiest weekends of the Andalucian summer — and the easiest way to attend without traffic, parking battles or queues is to arrive by sea. From Puerto Banús the run is roughly 22 nautical miles east, an hour at cruising speed, and you finish the day anchored offshore with the headline act drifting across the water. This guide explains how the trip actually works on our fleet, what it costs, and which boats suit the festival best. For the full boat list and pricing, see the main page.

Why arrive at Cala de Mijas by yacht

The festival site sits on the beachfront just east of La Cala de Mijas marina. On festival weekend the AP-7 exit backs up from late afternoon, taxis triple their fares and parking within 2 km is gone by 18:00. By yacht you bypass all of it: you anchor 200–300 metres off the beach, tender in when you want and tender out when you've had enough. You keep your own food, drinks and bathroom on board, and the return trip to Puerto Banús in flat night seas is genuinely one of the better parts of the day.

Practically speaking, this is a charter that suits groups of 6–12 who want a proper day out rather than just transport. The boat is the venue; the festival is a 90-minute interval in the middle.

The route from Puerto Banús

All our boats depart Puerto Banús. The eastbound route runs past Marbella Marina, the Golden Mile, Río Verde, Cabopino and Calahonda before reaching La Cala de Mijas. Total distance is around 22 NM. A typical timeline on the Azimut 39 or Astondoa 40 at 22 knots:

TimeLocationNotes
14:00Depart Puerto BanúsWelcome drinks, briefing
14:45CabopinoSwim stop, 30–45 min
16:30Arrive Cala de MijasAnchor, tender check
17:00–22:00FestivalTender shuttles ashore
22:30Depart for BanúsDinner on deck
00:00Back in BanúsLate return possible

The Mangusta 80 and Pershing 46 run the route noticeably faster, useful if you want a longer Cabopino stop. The Lagoon 380 catamaran is slower but the most stable platform at anchor off an open beach.

Boats that suit the festival

For groups of 8–11 the sweet spot is the Astondoa 40 or Azimut 39 — Tier A pricing, full inclusions, and enough deck space to actually enjoy the day. Both are 12.5m, both seat 9–11 guests, and both come in at €749 for 2 hours rising to €2,299 for 8 hours with skipper, fuel, drinks and 21% IVA included.

For a statement event or a 12-guest party, the Mangusta 80 (white or grey) is the obvious upgrade: 24 metres, free jet ski, €4,719 minimum 4 hours. The Azimut 58 Flybridge, Pershing 46 and Ferretti 94 are priced on request via WhatsApp — useful if you want a flybridge for the sound system or extra cabins for guests staying late.

For groups that prioritise stability over speed, the Lagoon 380 catamaran (11.6m, 10 pax) sits flat at anchor even in 1-metre swell. That matters at Cala de Mijas, which is an open roadstead.

Anchoring and tender logistics

The bay east of La Cala marina has a sand seabed in 6–10 metres, holding well in settled weather. We typically anchor 200–300 metres offshore — close enough for a 5-minute tender run, far enough to stay out of the swimming zone. The skipper runs a fixed shuttle: confirmed drop times (e.g. 17:00 and 19:30) and confirmed pickup times (e.g. 22:00 and midnight). You don't need to call — you just turn up at the agreed spot.

Conditions matter. Westerly poniente winds above 15 knots make the anchorage uncomfortable; in that case the skipper will hold the boat closer to Cabopino, which is 6 NM back west and far more sheltered. We monitor the forecast 48 hours out and offer free date changes if conditions look unsuitable.

What's included on every charter

  • Licensed Spanish skipper, fuel, insurance, safety equipment
  • Water, soft drinks, beer, white wine and cava
  • Light snacks (cured ham, cheese, olives, crisps)
  • Towels, Bluetooth sound system, swim ladder
  • 21% Spanish IVA — the quoted price is the final price

Not included: festival entry tickets (buy on the official festival site), any restaurants ashore, and jet ski hire on Tier A boats. The Mangusta 80 includes the jet ski free. For full inclusion details see the fleet page.

Festival-day food on board

Most groups skip the food trucks ashore and eat on deck. Standard catering is built into the price — light snacks for grazing through the afternoon. For a proper dinner we can add a chef-prepared menu (paella, grilled fish, salads) for €45–65 per person, ordered 72 hours in advance via WhatsApp. The 8-hour Tier A charter at €2,299 leaves comfortable headroom in most budgets for catering, festival tickets and a round of cocktails ashore.

Booking timeline and deposits

Cala de Mijas Music Festival weekend is the busiest non-July date for our fleet. Tier A boats and the Lagoon 380 sell out 4–6 weeks ahead. To book, message us on WhatsApp with date, group size and boat preference. We confirm within the hour during the working day, hold the slot for 24 hours, and send a deposit link — typically 30% to confirm, balance on the charter day. Cancellation for weather is free up to 48 hours before departure.

Frequently asked questions

Can I attend Cala de Mijas Music Festival by yacht from Marbella?

Yes. We depart Puerto Banús and cruise roughly 22 NM east to anchor off La Cala de Mijas beach, within tender distance of the festival site. The run takes 50–70 minutes on a planing boat such as the Pershing 46 or Fairline Targa 12m, longer on a displacement cruiser. You stay on board for food, drinks and music drifting over the water, then tender ashore for the headline sets. The skipper coordinates timings so you don't miss the acts you care about.

How far is Cala de Mijas from Puerto Banús by sea?

About 22 nautical miles east along the coast, passing Cabopino and Calahonda. At 22 knots — a comfortable cruise for our Azimut 39 or Astondoa 40 — that's roughly an hour. The Mangusta 80 and other Tier B boats will do it noticeably faster, but most guests prefer to slow down, swim at Cabopino on the way and arrive relaxed. Plan the return for after sunset; the run back in flat evening seas is part of the experience.

Which boats in your fleet work best for the festival?

For groups of 8–11, the Azimut 39 and Astondoa 40 hit the sweet spot — Tier A pricing from €749/2h, full inclusions, comfortable for a long day. For larger parties or a statement event, the Mangusta 80, Azimut 58 Flybridge or Pershing 46 give you more deck space and a proper sound system. The Lagoon 380 catamaran is the most stable option at anchor off an open beach, which matters if conditions get lumpy.

Is it safe to anchor off Cala de Mijas?

In settled summer weather, yes — the seabed is sand and holds well in 6–10 metres. The bay is an open roadstead though, so westerly poniente winds above 15 knots make it uncomfortable and the skipper may move the boat to a more sheltered spot near Cabopino. We monitor the forecast in the 48 hours before departure and will rebook your charter date free of charge if conditions look unsuitable. Safety always overrides the festival schedule.

What's included in the charter price?

Every charter includes a licensed skipper, fuel, insurance, safety equipment and Spanish IVA at 21%. On board you'll find water, soft drinks, beer, white wine, cava and light snacks. Towels and a Bluetooth sound system are standard. What's not included: festival tickets (buy separately on the official site), restaurant lunches ashore, and any extras like jet ski hire on Tier A boats. The Mangusta 80 includes the jet ski free of charge.

How long should I book the boat for?

For festival day we recommend 6–8 hours minimum. A typical plan: depart Puerto Banús around 14:00, swim stop at Cabopino, arrive Cala de Mijas by 16:30, anchor and tender ashore for the early sets, return to the boat for dinner on deck, then catch the headliner before cruising home under stars. The 8-hour rate on Tier A boats is €2,299 — far better value per hour than the 2-hour minimum.

Can the skipper drop us at the festival and pick us up later?

Yes, this is the most common request. The skipper anchors safely offshore and runs the tender on a fixed schedule — for example, drops at 17:00 and 19:30, pickups at 22:00 and midnight. Discuss the timing on the WhatsApp before booking so we can confirm the boat is suited to overnight anchoring or has fuel reserves for a late return. Note that very late returns (after 01:00) require pre-approval from the captain.

How do I book a festival charter?

Message us on WhatsApp with your preferred date, group size and which boat interests you. We confirm availability within the hour during the working day, hold the slot for 24 hours, and send a deposit link — typically 30% to confirm, balance on the day. For festival weekends we recommend booking 4–6 weeks ahead; Tier A boats and the Lagoon 380 catamaran sell out first. See the main page for the full fleet and pricing tiers.
