Sotogrande's polo season is the social anchor of the Costa del Sol summer, and arriving by yacht from Puerto Banús is by some distance the most civilised way to do it. The marina sits 22 nautical miles west — under an hour at cruising speed — and a chartered boat solves the two perennial problems of polo week: parking near Santa María, and somewhere properly comfortable to retreat to between chukkas. This 2026 guide covers the season calendar, the run from Puerto Banús, which boats suit which day, and what your guests should actually wear.

The 2026 Sotogrande polo calendar

Santa María Polo Club runs three flagship tournaments in succession, collectively known as the High Goal season. The Bronze Cup opens proceedings in the last week of July, the Silver Cup follows through the second and third weeks of August, and the Gold Cup closes the calendar on the final Sunday of August. Headline 22-goal fixtures typically start at 6pm to escape the heat, with the lower-goal games scheduled earlier in the afternoon.

Match days run Tuesday to Sunday — Mondays are dark. The Gold Cup final weekend is the busiest of the year for Sotogrande Marina, for the polo VIP enclosure, and for our fleet. If you have flexibility, a Wednesday or Thursday Silver Cup match offers the same horses, the same after-party at Trocadero Sotogrande, and noticeably better availability.

The Puerto Banús to Sotogrande passage

The coastal run west covers 22 NM and takes around 50 minutes at 26 knots on a planing boat like the Pershing 46, Azimut 58 Flybridge or either Mangusta 80. The Lagoon 380 catamaran takes roughly 2 hours 30 minutes, which is the right pace if you want a proper lunch under way. The route passes Estepona, the dramatic cliffs at Punta de la Chullera, and the long Casares beaches before turning into the Sotogrande estuary.

Levante winds — the easterly that defines summer weather here — generally build after 3pm. They make for a faster outbound passage and a slightly bumpier return, particularly between Estepona and Punta Chullera. Our skippers will time your departure window around the polo throw-in and the wind forecast.

Berthing, anchoring and getting to the field

Sotogrande Marina is the closest moorage to Santa María Polo Club — 8 minutes by taxi, slightly longer in match-day traffic. Transient berths during August book up by April, so we more often anchor in the bay just west of the marina entrance and tender guests ashore. Anchorage holding is good in 4-6m of sand. The walk from the dinghy dock to a waiting transfer car takes 3 minutes.

If you would rather not move at all between chukkas, the alternative is to base the boat in Puerto Banús, drive the 45 minutes to Sotogrande for the match, and return by yacht to Marbella for dinner. Many of our Gold Cup groups prefer this format — it keeps the boat as a daytime venue and the polo as the evening event.

Which boat for which day

For a couple or a small group attending one match, the Azimut 39 or Astondoa 40 at €749 for two hours and €2,299 for a full eight-hour day is the right call. Both carry up to 11 guests, both run skipper-plus-drinks-plus-VAT included, and both are big enough to entertain pre-match without the running costs of a superyacht.

For groups of 8 to 12 on Gold Cup final weekend, the Mangusta 80 (€4,719 minimum 4 hours, jet ski included) is the social-media boat of the fleet. The white and grey variants are interchangeable in spec. For 12 guests wanting overnight options, the Canados 86, Ferretti 94 or Maiora 26m are quoted on request — message us on WhatsApp for a tailored proposal.

What is included on board

Every charter in our fleet ships with a licensed skipper, fuel, drinking water, soft drinks, local Estrella beer, Spanish white wine, cava, light snacks, life jackets and full third-party insurance. Spanish IVA at 21% is included in every quoted price. There are no fuel surcharges on the standard Puerto Banús to Sotogrande return run.

For polo days we recommend pre-ordering a chilled lunch — sushi, jamón ibérico, fresh fish, or a cold seafood platter. Champagne upgrades, premium spirits and birthday cakes are quoted on request. See our full inclusions page for the standard kit.

Dress code, etiquette and the divot stomp

On board, dress is light: linen, cotton, swimwear and soft deck shoes. At Santa María, smart casual is the convention — chinos, linen shirts, panama hats for men; sundresses, sun hats and flat shoes for women. Heels sink straight into the turf, particularly during the traditional half-time divot stomp where guests walk the field replacing chunks of grass kicked up by the ponies. Bring a change of clothes for the return cruise; the deck cools rapidly after sunset and an evening Levante can drop the apparent temperature by 6°C.

Booking, deposits and 2026 availability

Message us on WhatsApp with your preferred match date, headcount and boat. We hold the date against a 30% deposit by card or bank transfer; the balance is due 7 days before departure. Gold Cup final weekend (the last Saturday and Sunday of August 2026) closes first — typically by late May. Bronze Cup dates in July and mid-week Silver Cup matches still have strong availability at time of writing.

Frequently asked questions

When is Sotogrande polo high season in 2026?

The Santa María Polo Club High Goal tournament typically runs from the last week of July through the final Sunday of August. The 2026 calendar mirrors prior years, with the Bronze Cup opening proceedings, the Silver Cup mid-August, and the Gold Cup final closing the season. Match days are usually Tuesday to Sunday, with the headline 22-goal fixtures in the late afternoon.

How far is Sotogrande from Puerto Banús by yacht?

Sotogrande sits 22 nautical miles west of Puerto Banús along the Costa del Sol coastline. At a cruising speed of 26 knots — comfortable for our Mangusta 80, Pershing 46 or Azimut 58 — the run takes around 50 minutes. Slower displacement passages on the Lagoon 380 catamaran extend that to roughly 2 hours 30 minutes, ideal if you want lunch under way.

Can we dock at Sotogrande Marina for the polo?

Yes, but transient berths during the August high goal weeks book up months in advance. We recommend cruising to Sotogrande, anchoring off the marina entrance or in the bay west of the harbour, then taking the tender ashore. The polo grounds are an 8-minute taxi from the marina. Speak to us on WhatsApp and we can advise on current berth availability.

Which boat suits a polo-day charter best?

For couples and small groups, the Azimut 39 at €749/2h gives you a smart aft deck for sundown drinks after the final chukka. For groups of 8 to 12 attending the Gold Cup, the Mangusta 80 from €4,719 (4 hours) brings a flybridge, swim platform and the jet ski you'll want during the long August afternoons between matches.

What does an all-inclusive Marbella charter include?

Every charter in our fleet includes a licensed skipper, fuel, water, soft drinks, local beer, Spanish white wine and cava, light snacks, full safety equipment, third-party insurance and the 21% Spanish IVA. There are no surprise port fees on the standard Puerto Banús run. Premium catering, champagne upgrades and longer routes can be quoted on request.

Is the sea calm enough for the polo crossing in August?

Generally yes. August in the Western Mediterranean is the most settled month of the year off Marbella, with morning seas under 0.5m. The Levante easterly can build to 15-18 knots after 3pm, producing short chop near Punta Chullera. Our skippers monitor the Tarifa forecast hourly and will reschedule departure windows if conditions disagree with your guests.

What should we wear on board and at the polo?

On board: light cotton, linen, swimwear, soft-soled deck shoes. At the polo: smart casual is the convention — chinos, linen shirts, panama hats for men; sundresses and flat shoes for women so you can stomp divots between chukkas. Heels sink into the turf. Keep a change of clothes on the yacht for the return cruise; the deck cools quickly after sunset.

How do we book and pay for a polo-week charter?

Message us on WhatsApp with your match date, group size and preferred boat. We hold the date with a 30% deposit by card or bank transfer, with the balance due 7 days before departure. Polo-week dates in August 2026 are already filling — Gold Cup final weekend is typically the first to close. Mid-week matches offer better availability and the same atmosphere.
