Combine two of Marbella's best experiences into one evening: a dolphin watching sunset cruise. You'll spend the first part of your charter scanning the Mediterranean for wild dolphins, then anchor off the coast to watch the sun sink behind La Concha. It's a private charter, so the itinerary is yours to shape.
Why combine dolphin watching with a sunset cruise?
Marbella's coastline runs west–east, which means the sun sets over the sea. That makes a sunset cruise naturally spectacular. By adding dolphin watching, you get two hours of active wildlife spotting followed by two hours of pure relaxation. The dolphins are most active in late afternoon, so the timing works perfectly.
All our boats depart from Puerto Banús, the marina at the heart of Marbella's Golden Mile. Your skipper knows the best dolphin grounds—usually 3–5 nautical miles offshore, near the drop-off where baitfish gather.
Best boats for dolphin watching and sunset
You want a boat with good sightlines and outdoor space. The Azimut 58 Flybridge (17.6m, 12 pax) has a raised flybridge that gives you a 360° view of the water—ideal for spotting dorsal fins. The Mangusta 80 (24m, 12 pax) is another favourite, with a large bow sunpad and a spacious aft deck for sunset drinks.
For smaller groups, the Astondoa 40 (12.5m, 9 pax) is nimble and efficient. The Azimut 39 (12.5m, 11 pax) offers similar performance. Both are Tier A boats, priced at €2,299 for an 8-hour charter including skipper, fuel, drinks, and snacks.
What to expect on a dolphin watching sunset cruise
Your skipper will brief you on safety and dolphin etiquette. Once you leave Puerto Banús, you'll head west towards Cabopino or south-west towards the open sea. Dolphins often surface near the boat, riding the bow wave. You'll see common dolphins (with their hourglass pattern) or bottlenose dolphins (larger, grey).
After 90–120 minutes, the skipper will turn back towards the coast and find a calm anchorage—Cala del Faro and Cala Cortés are popular spots. Here you'll drop anchor, the crew will open the bar, and you'll watch the sun set. The light turns gold, then pink, then purple over the Sierra Blanca.

Best time of year for dolphin watching
Dolphin sightings are possible year-round, but peak season runs April to October. Water temperatures are warmer, baitfish are abundant, and the dolphins feed closer to shore. In summer, you'll also get longer daylight hours—sunset is around 21:30 in July and August, so a 17:00 departure gives you plenty of time.
Winter cruises are quieter and cooler, but the dolphins are still there. The sea is often calmer in October and November, which makes spotting easier.
How to book your dolphin watching sunset cruise
All charters are private—you book the whole boat for your group. Use the WhatsApp number on our Boat Rental Marbella homepage to check availability and get a price for your preferred boat. We'll confirm the departure time, itinerary, and any extras.
If you want to add a jet ski to the experience, the Mangusta 80 (White) includes a free jet ski on 4-hour charters (€4,719 minimum). That's a fun way to get even closer to the dolphins—but always with respect for marine life.
Frequently asked questions
What time does a dolphin watching sunset cruise start?
Most combos depart between 16:00 and 17:00 from Puerto Banús. This gives you roughly two hours of daylight to search for dolphins off the coast, followed by two hours to anchor and watch the sunset. You can adjust start times by talking to your skipper.
Are dolphin sightings guaranteed on a Marbella cruise?
No operator can guarantee wild dolphin sightings. The Costa del Sol has resident populations of common and bottlenose dolphins, and sightings happen on roughly 80% of trips during peak season (May–September). If you don't see any, your skipper will extend the search area.
Which boat is best for a dolphin watching sunset cruise?
The Azimut 58 Flybridge (17.6m, 12 pax) offers a raised flybridge for panoramic views, ideal for spotting dolphins. The Mangusta 80 (24m, 12 pax) also has excellent sightlines. For smaller groups, the Astondoa 40 (12.5m, 9 pax) is a popular choice.
What is included in the price of the combo cruise?
Every charter includes a licensed skipper, fuel, insurance, safety equipment, Spanish VAT (21%), and a drinks package with water, soft drinks, beer, white wine, and cava. Light snacks are also provided. Tier A boats cost €2,299 for 8 hours.
Where do you see the sunset from a Marbella boat?
Your skipper will anchor in a sheltered spot west of Marbella, typically off Cabopino, Cala del Faro, or Cala Cortés. These positions give you an unobstructed view of the sun dropping behind La Concha mountain and the Sierra Blanca range.
Can I bring my own food and drinks on the cruise?
Yes, you can bring your own food and additional drinks. The boat already provides soft drinks, beer, wine, cava, and light snacks. If you want a full meal, many guests order sushi or tapas from Puerto Banús restaurants and bring it aboard.
How many dolphins can you see near Marbella?
Common dolphins travel in pods of 10–50 individuals. Bottlenose dolphins form smaller groups of 5–15. You may also see striped dolphins or, less commonly, pilot whales. The waters between Marbella and Estepona are a feeding ground for several species.
Is a dolphin watching sunset cruise suitable for children?
Yes, absolutely. Children love spotting dolphins and the sunset experience is family-friendly. The boat has safety equipment for all ages. The Azimut 39 (11 pax) and Astondoa 40 (9 pax) are both stable, comfortable choices for families with kids.
