A Tarifa day trip from Marbella by boat is the longest single-day itinerary we run. Puerto Banús to Tarifa is around 52 nautical miles one way, which means a 104 NM round trip, a 10-12 hour charter window, and a fast yacht. It is doable, it is spectacular when the Strait of Gibraltar is calm, and it is the wrong call on a windy day. This guide explains exactly when it works, which boats handle it, and what the day looks like from cast-off to return — see our full Boat Rental Marbella hub if you would rather stay closer to home.

The route: Puerto Banús to the Strait of Gibraltar

Every charter departs Puerto Banús. The skipper tracks the coast south-west past Estepona (10 NM), Sotogrande (22 NM) and Punta Chullera (28 NM), then crosses the bay of Algeciras with Gibraltar visible to port. From there it is 18 NM of open water to Isla de las Palomas, the official southernmost point of mainland Europe. Africa sits only 14 km across the Strait, and the Rif mountains are usually clear on the horizon.

The return leg is identical in distance but often slower — Levante winds tend to build from late morning, putting a head sea on the way back. The skipper plans the day around that, leaving Puerto Banús by 08:00 and aiming to be east of Sotogrande again by 17:00.

Best boats for the Tarifa run

This itinerary lives or dies on cruising speed and sea-keeping. We will only put you on a yacht that can hold 22+ knots in a moderate chop and carry enough fuel for the full 104 NM. In practice that means:

  • Pershing 46 — 14m, 10 pax, fast planing hull, our default Tarifa boat
  • Fairline Targa 12m — 12m, 10 pax, sporty and economical
  • Azimut 58 Flybridge — 17.6m, 12 pax, comfortable for larger groups
  • Mangusta 80, K80, Canados 86, Ferretti 94 — 24-29m flagships for premium charters

The Astondoa 40, Azimut 39, Bandido, Dubhe, Lagoon 380, Mariah SX21, Red Tide and 7m speedboat are not offered for Tarifa — range, fuel, or hull type rule them out. If you want a slower, more relaxed day, see our overnight yacht charter or multi-day itineraries instead.

Timing, winds and when to book

The Strait of Gibraltar has two named winds. Levante blows from the east, Poniente from the west, and either can hit 30-40 knots when the pressure gradient sharpens. Above 25 knots sustained, we do not push past Estepona. The skipper makes the call by 07:00 on departure day using AEMET data and a final look at the swell.

What you actually do once you arrive

Most groups expect to dock in Tarifa town for lunch. That is rarely the right call. Tarifa marina is small, busy with kite-school traffic and not built for visiting yachts on a short stop. The better plan is to anchor off Isla de las Palomas or Playa de Los Lances Norte, swim in genuine Atlantic water, and have lunch on board. The crew lays out the included snacks, drinks and bar before you arrive.

Cetacean sightings are the other draw. Between Punta Chullera and the Strait you cross known feeding grounds for striped and common dolphin pods. From June to October, pilot whales are routine and orca sightings spike in July-August when tuna shoals move through. The skipper will idle the engines if a pod surfaces nearby — no chasing, no guarantees.

Pricing and what is included

Tarifa pricing is on request rather than off the standard grid. The day is longer than our published 8-hour rate and burns roughly twice the fuel of a Marbella-Estepona loop. Every charter still includes:

  • Licensed Spanish skipper
  • Fuel for the full itinerary
  • Water, soft drinks, beer, white wine and cava
  • Light snacks on board
  • Insurance and all safety equipment
  • Spanish IVA at 21%

For comparison, a standard 8-hour day on our Tier A boats (Astondoa 40, Azimut 39) is €2,299 all-in along the Marbella-Estepona coast. The Mangusta 80 starts at €4,719 for a 4-hour minimum. Tarifa quotes sit above those baselines and we will give you a firm number in writing once we know your date and group size.

How to book and what we need from you

WhatsApp is the fastest channel. Send your date, group size, and whether you have a preferred boat. We will reply with a quote, a recommended yacht, and the Tarifa-specific safety briefing. A 30% deposit secures the date; balance is due on the day. If weather forces a cancel, you choose between a full refund or a rebook — your call, no quibble.

Pair this trip with our other long-range experiences if you want to keep going: a single overnight turns the Tarifa run into a relaxed two-day cruise with an anchor stop in Sotogrande or Gibraltar bay.

Frequently asked questions

Is a Tarifa day trip from Marbella by boat actually realistic?

Yes, but only on a fast yacht and only when the Strait of Gibraltar is calm. The round trip is roughly 104 nautical miles, so you need a boat that cruises at 22-30 knots and a full 10-12 hour window. On a slow displacement boat or a windy Levante day, it is not realistic and we will recommend an overnight charter instead.

How long does it take to reach Tarifa by boat from Puerto Banús?

At 22 knots cruising speed, expect about 2 hours 20 minutes each way. The Pershing 46 and Mangusta 80 can push closer to 30 knots in flat water, cutting that to under 1 hour 45 minutes. We always plan for slower returns, since afternoon winds tend to stiffen as you approach the Strait.

Which boats in your fleet are suitable for the Tarifa run?

Fast planing yachts only: the Pershing 46, Fairline Targa 12m, Azimut 58 Flybridge, Mangusta 80, K80, Canados 86 and Ferretti 94. Smaller speedboats and the Lagoon 380 catamaran are not suitable — range, sea state and fuel consumption rule them out. We will match boat to forecast on the day.

What does a Tarifa day trip cost from Marbella?

Pricing is on request because Tarifa sits outside our standard 2-hour and 8-hour grid. Expect a full-day charter rate plus a fuel surcharge reflecting the extra distance. All charters still include licensed skipper, fuel, water, soft drinks, beer, white wine, cava, snacks, insurance and 21% Spanish IVA. WhatsApp us with your date for a firm quote.

What will we see between Marbella and Tarifa?

You pass Estepona, Sotogrande and Gibraltar in the distance, then enter the Strait where Africa is clearly visible only 14 kilometres away. Dolphin pods are routine off Punta Chullera, and pilot whales and orcas are seen between June and October. The skipper slows for sightings when conditions allow.

What can we actually do once we reach Tarifa?

Most charters anchor off the Isla de las Palomas or Playa de Los Lances for a swim and lunch on board, rather than docking. Tarifa town is busy, kite-surf focused and not yacht-friendly for short stops. A 60-90 minute swim stop on the Atlantic side is the standard plan before heading back.

When is the best month to do this trip?

Late May through early October, with June and September the sweet spot. July and August can bring the Levante wind, which funnels through the Strait at 25-40 knots and shuts the day down. Spring and autumn give calmer water but cooler swims — sea temperature drops below 19°C outside summer.

What happens if the weather turns?

Safety call sits with the skipper. If the Levante or Poniente is forecast above 25 knots, we will not push past Estepona — we redirect to a sheltered Marbella itinerary or reschedule at no extra cost. You will know the call by 18:00 the evening before, and again at 07:00 on departure day.
